Why do you like playing music games?
(rock band/guitar hero/lips etc)
Alongside the usual suspects of FPS, role-playing, strategy and so on – what is it about music games that are appealing?
Do you like ‘alternative’ controllers(ike guitars and drums..) do you like the microphone input (aren’t as bad at singing as you thought?) do you like the social aspect of the genre? (it’s more interactive then FPS multiplayer..)
I would like as many opinions as possible
(apologises to those who have already answered – just trying to get more answers for a review..)

the appeal to me was beatles music, always been a fan
It’s an escape and it allows the user to experience fun in the comfort of their own home. Just another way to have fun I suppose.
Playing the guitar,
Without having to learn to play the guitar..
The appeal is about escapism, taking yourself out of your normal life and putting yourself in a fantasy role. That of a rock star or a soldier.
Music games give the element of being able to hear great tunes and feeling like you have some ownership of that music. People hear great music they like and buy the CD or download it from web sites so that they can feel some ownership of it as a fan but I think the music games like Guitar Hero, Singstar gives the player an extra dimension of feeling as though they have some part of the creative process and part of the music. Microphones and alternative controllers add to this experience.
I’ve often found that the microphone games are not very accurate at detecting singing skill, it’s more about holding a note for the correct amount of time, whether you sing in tune or not. I suppose that’s part of the appeal though. The games are supposed to be social and inclusive, people would stop playing them if they were all about singing skill.
Well, its like combining my 2 favorite things into one, Music and Games.
Another thing is that to just enjoy the music without any distractions such as focusing on battles.
And finally, to invite or find friends to enjoy the music together.
Playing some of the best songs ever made with friends, what’s there not to like
